 The Films

Exciting news! This was the main goal of the project in the first place.
So far, we have made a series of three documentaries.

Part 1 : The Cavity

Early '90s Austin, Texas desperately needs a venue for underground bands. In 1991, The Cavity opens as an all-ages BYOB squat and punk dive. Green Day, Bikini Kill, Sublime, Anitseen, Chumbawamba, UK Subs, and GG Allin tour through, with only Allin's fecal-riddled show ending in tear gas and arrests.
The Cavity was the spark that lit Austin's explosion of underground clubs which continues today.

Part 2 : Blue Flamingo

Mid-1990s Austin, Texas. A small cross-dressing karaoke bar becomes ground zero for the resurgance of a national garage punk scene. The venue was also where Gerard Cosloy signed Spoon to Matador during SXSW.

The film explores the cross-pollination of a local scene that included zines, indie record stores, cheap recording studios and 7" records all coming together as one.

Part 3 : Emo's

As the cornerstone of alternative music in Austin, Texas in the '90s, Emo's opened as a big two-stage venue on the corner of Austin's two important entertainment districts: 6th Street and Red River.

With no door cover, the venue gave local bands opening slots for big headling acts. Smaller Austin bands could play with L7, Royal Trux, Rocket From The Crypt, Jon Spencer, Unsane, Cows, NoMeansNo... The list goes on.

Outside of the music, the artwork adorning the walls - by Lindsey Kuhn and Frank Kozik - attracted the attention of local law enforcement.

Eventually, the club got sold and closed down. C3/Live Nation purchased the brand and opened a soul-less grey box across town with the name "Emo's".
